The estimated potential yield for Matrinxã is 6,040 tons, with the Central Amazon region contributing the largest share at 74%. Other significant fishing areas include the Brazilian-Colombian-Peruvian Border (8%), Tocantins (7%), Madeira (6%), and the Peruvian Amazon (3%).
The two Matrinxã species, Brycon amazonicus and Brycon cephalus, are omnivorous as adults, with a strong preference for fruits and seeds. While adult fish are most abundant in blackwater and clearwater tributaries, juveniles are primarily found in whitewater floodplains. Both species are migratory, with fishing activity peaking during their spawning and dispersal migrations. During the low-water season, they often move into the lower reaches of terra firme streams, where they remain in deep pools until water levels rise again.
